EU Food Labelling 2025: New Origin Rules for Dried Fruits

Blog Article cover

From 1 January 2025, new EU regulations require mandatory country-of-origin labelling for dried fruits, nuts, and certain ready-to-eat products. This regulation has direct implications for producers, importers, and retailers operating in the European market.

What Changed?

The European Commission extended the mandatory origin labelling requirements — previously applicable mainly to fresh fruits, vegetables, and certain meats — to include dried fruits, nuts, and fruit-based snack products. The regulation amends Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011 (Food Information to Consumers).

Key Requirements

  • Single-origin products: The country of origin must be clearly stated on the label (e.g., "Origin: India").
  • Mixed-origin products: For products containing ingredients from multiple countries, the origin must be indicated for each component, or generally as "EU", "non-EU", or "EU and non-EU".
  • Visibility: Origin information must be in the same field of vision as the product name and net quantity, and in a font size no smaller than 1.2mm (x-height).

Impact on Importers and Retailers

Companies importing dried fruits from countries like India, Turkey, or Iran need to verify that their label designs comply with the new requirements. Non-compliance may result in market access restrictions or penalties under national enforcement of EU food law.

For B2B buyers, this regulation also affects bulk ingredient documentation. Certificates of Analysis (COA) and product specifications should include origin information for traceability.
